My toothpaste used to be white, but is now semi-translucent. Reading the packaging, I see it now says “no artificial colourings”. I guess it used to contain titanium dioxide for its whitening effect, and since titanium dioxide is no longer considered safe in food, it’s also being phased out in toothpaste.

When toothpaste has looked blindingly white for forty-plus years, the new, gelly-looking one gives a less clean and appealing impression at first glance. But do I really need and want ground-up rocks in my toothpaste just to make it look whiter? No, not really.
