These were built in the beginning of the 20th century, and the last one was in active military use until 1997. These days they’re a tourist attraction only; you can get guided tours inside.

Today there were regular free buses to ferry visitors from the garrison to the fort and back. We went by car instead (Eric flew to Luleå and rented a car to drive to Boden) so we wouldn’t need to worry about the bus times. Which was both a good and a bad idea – the parking was absolute chaos since the site was flooded with visitors. Cars were parked in all possible and impossible spots, so that when the bus finally arrived, it clipped the corner of one car, and afterwards wasn’t able to drive down the hill because there were cars parked along the side of the road, making it too narrow for the bus. I am mildly curious about how the situation was resolved, but we didn’t hang around to see.

We didn’t have time for a guided tour, so we just admired the views.

Ingrid pointed out the places where her platoon has been doing their field exercises. Her final “beret test” ended right on top of this hill.

Afterwards we visited the community center for the town’s soldiers – a combination of café, shop, and movie rooms. Eric and Adrian then left for their flight back, while Ingrid and I walked around in central Boden, waiting for dinnertime.

The extraordinary influx of visitors mildly overwhelmed the restaurant industry in town. The first restaurant we tried was fully booked. The second one we managed to get a table at, but the next party to arrive after us was turned away.

I wanted something Nordic and ordered a rainbow trout. Ingrid wanted something that wasn’t a stew and ordered an entrecote. Both felt absolutely stuffed afterwards. (We had lunch at the garrison canteen, where both the staff and the enlisted soldiers eat every day. The food was good, but it can only be described as canteen food: something you can cook in bulk and ladle up quickly in large portions.)

After we’d seen everything in the garrison itself, we went to see Rödbergsfortet, or the Red Hill Fort – a part of the fortifications around Boden.
