{"id":18973,"date":"2024-05-29T20:39:14","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T19:39:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.toomik.net\/helen\/blog\/?p=18973"},"modified":"2024-06-11T21:06:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T20:06:44","slug":"daily_3383_-_garbage_day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.toomik.net\/helen\/blog\/2024\/05\/29\/daily_3383_-_garbage_day\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily: 3383 &#8211; garbage day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I got to spend today with one of Sortera&#8217;s trucks, picking up bags of waste for recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s John, the driver, ready to start the day, bright and early at 7 o&#8217;clock.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_1.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s me, kitted with a hard hat and high-viz vest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_7.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I always thought that they&#8217;d attach a hook to the straps of the bag and lift it that way. Ain&#8217;t no one got time for that! Turns out they use the scoop to grab and lift the bag. And it can be a delicate job, when the bag is right next to a building facade, or in between trees and lamp posts and other obstacles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_3.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_4.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_5.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the jobs involved lifting the bag over a dense 3.5-metre hedge. A little bit challenging.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_2.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The truck has a veeery long arm.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_6.jpg\" class=\"x6y45\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the container started filling up, John had to climb up into it so he could see where he was placing each bag, so he could use the container to its maximum.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_8.jpg\" class=\"x45y6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When it was all full, we drove to the sorting facility, where we dumped all the bags. Another guy with a tractor took over and sorted the bags into their respective piles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_9.jpg\" class=\"x6y45\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_10.jpg\" class=\"x6y45\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/helen\/blog\/images\/daily_4\/3383_Sortera_day_11.jpg\" class=\"x6y45\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove off again to a fire-damaged school building to pick up chunks of roof metal.
