{"id":1056,"date":"2009-11-23T22:43:50","date_gmt":"2009-11-23T21:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.toomik.net\/helen\/blog\/?p=1056"},"modified":"2010-01-26T22:25:47","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T21:25:47","slug":"climategate_the_cru_emails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.toomik.net\/helen\/blog\/2009\/11\/23\/climategate_the_cru_emails\/","title":{"rendered":"ClimateGate \/ The CRU emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nIf you&rsquo;ve been following my delicious links (which you probably haven&rsquo;t, at least until I started posting them here, too) you might remember <a href=\"http:\/\/article.nationalreview.com\/print\/?q=ZTBiMTRlMDQxNzEyMmRhZjU3ZmYzODI5MGY4ZWI5OWM=\">The Dog Ate Global Warming<\/a>, a story about how key climate data seems to have been &ldquo;misplaced&rdquo; by scientists at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, maintainers of several key data series supporting the global warming hypothesis.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNow emails and other internal documents from the CRU have been leaked (and there are <a href=\"http:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2009\/11\/23\/the-crutape-letters\u00ae-an-alternate-explanation\/\">various theories<\/a> about how they got out). CRU supporters (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2009\/11\/the-cru-hack\/\">RealClimate.org<\/a>) try to deflect criticism by predicting that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the noise-generating components of the blogosphere will generate a lot of noise about this. [&#8230;] Instances of cherry-picked and poorly-worded &ldquo;gotcha&rdquo; phrases will be pulled out of context.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\n(Try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/x-25061-Climate-Change-Examiner~y2009m11d20-ClimateGate--Climate-centers-server-hacked-revealing-documents-and-emails\">this listing of excerpts at Examiner.com<\/a> for a taste of those cherry-picked phrases. Sounds pretty bad to me.)\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOthers (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/comment\/columnists\/guest_contributors\/article6927598.ece\">(Lord) Nigel Lawson<\/a>) read the documents as revealing that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n(a) the scientists have been manipulating the raw temperature figures to show a relentlessly rising global warming trend; (b) they have consistently refused outsiders access to the raw data; (c) the scientists have been trying to avoid freedom of information requests; and (d) they have been discussing ways to prevent papers by dissenting scientists being published in learned journals.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nI&rsquo;ve been trying to find some place that actually summarizes the situation but I guess it&rsquo;s too early for that.
