Gina's book is just good old common sense. I suspect it is an ancient schedule. With my first baby, nothing went right. She was cranky and wouldnt sleep or feed. I had a lot of "helpful" people interfering wiht her schedule and a lot of opinions. I was so zonked that I couldnt even understand Gina's advice or schedule. I had peds and midwives clamoring for me to add formula before we finally got it. For the second baby, I was on point. I made out simple notes that I could understand based on Gina's advice. Good supply, happy baby, quick sleeping thru the night. We are grownups, she gives us a guideline. We can decide what to do or not to do. Love her guidelines. They make sense. Take what you want or adapt them. Thanks for the book Gina.

Thanks for this thorough review! I'm expecting my second baby soon, and am going to give Gina Ford's book at try - well, at least I'm going to read it! With my first baby we used the "on demand" system, much like the Swedish midwives suggest, I guess (we live in Norway so I'm sure it's similar) and while I *loved* the first months, by seven months her sleep was a total mess - she woke EVERY HOUR during the night wanting to be fed. It was a huge effort to retrain her and to be honest, bedtime was a hassle for years. This time round I really want to do a better job of helping her settle into routines that work for all of us right from the start - at the same time I really loved the flexibility of taking her wherever I happened to want to go and the coziness of just letting her eat whenever and fall asleep at the breast every feeding (ok, we're definitely not doing that EVERY FEEDING this time) so I'm hoping to find a way that lets me keep a lot of that cosy flexibility while having a better routine - probably kind of impossible - we'll see when the baby's here :)

We bought the book prior to our son being born, as like most soon to be parents we were eager to know what to expect. Reading the book was akin to listening to Jade Goody's views on Racism.

We found a routine or should i say Our son found a routine, within four weeks he was sleeping for 12 hours a night, Gina suggests waking him to feed... Gina fails to recognise that twelve hours silence for new parents, is like winning the lottery.

See, that's another interesting thing: even people who haven't read her books have very firm opinions about her!

Very interesting. I read a little bit about Gina Ford when my little one was born, but stayed clear of her books. She's a nazi. With some good suggestions, but nevertheless :) By about 6 months every mom and baby probably has their own routine that works for them. Gina makes staying home with a baby sound like a boot camp from day 1. I certainly wasn't ready for this after I gave birth and 2 years later do not regret the first few months of chaos... it all settles, babies will learn to sleep and a routine will come.
